curated by Wu Hung, professor of Chinese Art History
at the University of Chicago and consulting curator
at the Smart Museum, and ICP curator Christopher Phillips.
Background
China has undergone a series of profound
transformations in the decades since the end of the
Cultural Revolution in 1976. Starting in the late
1970s, a new generation of Chinese leaders initiated
a series of reforms that aimed at experimenting with
a market economy within a centralized political system,
and a managed “open door” approach to foreign
investment and external cultural influences. By the
mid-1990s, the consequences of these changes began
to be fully evident.
